Remains of the day.
Feb 9th, 2006 by B.
I’m exhausted. We were up until 4:30 yesterday morning trying to figure out what we wanted to bring with us on the plane to Dresden. Well, we were up until about midnight doing that… then spent the next 4.5 hours arguing over how to condense all the crap in the ‘take with us’ pile to a reasonable amount.
Then at 8:00 am the packing team showed up bright eyed & bushy tailed… going straight to work packing up our life. This is what remains of our year in good ‘ol Colorado Springs:

The crates hold our plasma & lcd tv’s… the best part of the day was watching them build the crates & pack the tv’s, and we have the added bonus of having the house smell like a lumberyard. Other than that I just tried to stay out of the way and not look embarrassed while Juan & Stan packed what seemed to be an extraordinary amount of flimsy under-things…. which seems ironic considering my ‘no panties’ stance.
The toughest day will be tomorrow when they actually load everything… then it all gets taken to a warehouse, repacked into a big container, driven to the coast and put on a ship. My poor stuff. It’ll be a miracle if it survives. And, of course, I’m completely convinced the idiots packing today did a terrible job… but really, who handles your stuff the way you’d want them to? It’s nice not having to worry about packing, but at the same time you spend 90% of your time bitching about how you’d have done it better yourself. At least I do… but I’m an ingrate, so what can you expect?
And then there’s everything we’ve kept out to take with us… and this isn’t even close to being all of it:

We are 100% insane in the membrane. Eight extremely large, extremely heavy suitcases… 3 rolling carry-ons… 3 laptop bags… 2 backpacks… and a partridge in a pear tree. Worst part is, we’re not even sure that will hold everything. I have NO idea how we’re going to get it all through the airport with only the two of us to lug it around (Robbie usually helps with Syd… she won’t have free hands for suitcases). On top of that, I can only imagine the groans in the customs line in either Frankfurt (our first stop on the way to our new home) or Dresden… or, god forbid, both.
Ugh.
On this day..

Yiiiiiikes! Somehow, I know you’ll find a way to cope B, you always do
dude, seriously i am so nervous and excited about this whole move thing that it probably isn’t normal… and it’s more than freaking me out a little to think of you being unconnected.
my life always seems a little more managable knowing you are only a mouse click away… this is all getting very real all of a sudden…
by the way, i think that is probably the most use your kitchen counters have ever had.
Good Grief … it looks you are going on one of my early Mexican Vacations.
One thing the ex absolutely could not do was minimize packing for travel … drove me crazy. Airports can be bad, but try 2 giant suitcases, 2 medium ones, 2 of the largest carry-ons allowed, large camera case & garment bags … on a Mexican bus. It felt like an African safari … without the Africans.
Yeah, I’m kinda particular about some of my stuff … I hope yours survives in good order. Which coast does it ship from ?… hope it doesn’t have to go through the Suez canal.
Keep the digital camera & laptop handy and hope for hot spots
Hang on for the ride … I’m really excited for you too !
Yeah, we’re all pretty excited here. To be honest I’m not sure which coast it will ship from.. When they quoted me th 6 week timeframe for our stuff to get there.. I figured it would be the east coast. Assuming the crate would take 2 weeks to make to the shipping port, a 1 week voyage (after a short stint sitting on the dock) and then back on a truck to cross the Fatherland.. But I’m not sure.. I just pray it all makes it there without incident..
When you get the the airport find a baggage handler and turn it all over to them!
Best of luck with the move!
