I survived earth day ‘06.
Apr 22nd, 2006 by B.
Today we celebrated earth day by going out & buying two massive 12,000 btu air conditioners. It may contribute to global warming, but I sure will sleep better at night…
On this day..

An air conditioner ?
You must have bought it just for the fan noise so you can sleep.
It doesn’t get that hot there … what 85F or so max then cools off to the 50s or 60s at night. And I bet you don’t have mosquitos.
I spent all day cleaning up debris from some bad t-storms thursday morning … and now I’m sunburned and a real redneck. I better put on some lotion and some loud Jane’s Addiction so I’m not mistaken for a good ‘ol boy.
I’m jealous. Sparky will not let me get an A/C. Something about the environment. damn krauts.
So we know who to blame when a hole in the ozone opens up over Dresden. Man, I want an A/C! It does get hot here in August. My German won’t let me get one either.
While I’ll admit that the A/C units pull more electricity, these are filled with R407c, a Non-ozone depleting refrigerant. Besides, which of us doesn’t have AC in our cars? Maybe you”ll have better luck with your persuasion now? Anyhow, just running the unit doesn’t release any gas. It’s worth a try.
The fan noise definitely factored into the decision, and for now running it in ‘fan’ mode (along with open windows) is good enough. But it was Jim’s co-workers who warned us to get ac units… apparently last summer was a real bitch here.
At least now we’re prepared!
Wow, all the neighbours are going to be begging to sleep over at your place during the summer! A couple of years ago it was 35°C *at night* for a couple of nights and I thought I was going to die. Don’t let anyone tell you you don’t need a/c in Germany.
Do they even sell air conditioners in this country?? Fortunately it never gets really hot or humid here in Hamburg.
Dave… they sell them everywhere here. Toom, Baumarkt, Saturn, Media Markt… I’m sure there are more. It’s incredibly humid here. Makes 25C (which we’ve already hit) feel like it’s sweltering.
I’ve expereinced a few hot nights, but I can’t say I’d bother buying an air conditioner — it would be unused for 10 or 11 months out of the year.
I’m jealous. We get strange looks whenever we mention buying a/c, but now that the sun is (finally!) here, it’s a tempting prospect. Then again, I spent the last six months complaining about the weather; what will I have to complain about if we buy an air conditioner?
Don’t feel guilty B. In my opinion A/C is a necessity of life.
I love my A/C! I use it year round…it makes the tinsel on the Christmas tree move and sparkle. But then again, I live in SE Texas.
Uncle Remus…SUNSCREEN!!! If you like I can even recommend some brands and suggest places locally you can buy it. No more redneck!
Earth day?
Oops.
It took me three years and one deadly hot summer to convince my ‘toher half’ to get a fan. There is something to be said for bringing your own American when it comes to shopping for ‘cooling’ applicances. TWO x AC? Bring on the down jackets in summer!
Oh my. From the comments, it sounds like you are in cooler climes — or at least, less humid climes — than we are. I contributed to earth day by making my spouse open the windows to air out the musty old house. You would have thought that I had asked him to walk into an oven. LOL. Damned midwesterners.
