Premiere Overload.
May 26th, 2006 by B.
We’ve been in tv watching overdrive since late Wednesday afternoon & our recent purchase of Premiere stations. Overall they’re a little disappointing… well, I should rephrase that, the company we go through, dig-it-all cable, set it up in such a way that it’s disappointing. We were told all the channels in the package we selected would have the option to be english-speaking. Not true. In fact, the primary reason for getting the package was so Iddy (Sydney) could have the (english-speaking) version of the disney channel- which turned out to be a total lie. I’m still pissed at dig-it-all about that & won’t be recommending them to anyone… we asked specifically about that channel on multiple occasions and were both told that it would come in english. A fact we took to heart, so we went and promised Sydney that she’d have all her favorite cartoons from the states back. And when we called to complain we got “errr, gee, I thought it was supposed to come in english… these things change all the time… let me make some calls and I’ll get back to you”. And of course I’m still waiting to hear back… fuckers.
Anyway, since we have a month of free use, we’re enjoying it before we cancel. I’ve already seen white girls twice (where’s a good eye-roll smilie when you need one), manchurian candidate, bourne identity, and a bunch of other crappy movies whose names I can’t recall.
The best part, though, are the series. There’s something so familiar about saying “sure, we can do whatever it is we need to, but we need to be back by 8:15 because that’s when Lost starts”. Best part is, the lag in airing the few american series that they do means we’ve already seen the things they’re showing now… it’s like we never missed a step. We’ve been watching Lost, Desp. Housewives, Six Feet Under (best series ever. period.), Nip/Tuck (one I wasn’t a fan of in the states.. but what the hell, now it’s something to watch)… and who knows what will be on tonight!
I just wish Premiere… in their infinite wisdom, would see fit to add a few english-speaking children’s channels to their line-up. I’m guessing we’re in the minority being expats with a young child and all… but hey, where’s the love??
Finally, does anyone living here know of a way to receive additional english-speaking channels? Right now we’ve got a few through kabel deutschland and the premiere stuff that I’m pretty sure we’ll cancel once our free month is up. Our building forbids satellites, so that option’s a no-go. Still, is there anything else? Am I missing an obvious solution? Probably not, huh…
Oh well, barbershop 2: back in business is about to come on, time to end this & go pop some popcorn…
On this day..

What you have sounds like heaven to me, our building doesn’t allow anything: no cable, no dishes. It does help the language skills to be forced to watch TV in German, but I can see the trouble in convincing the kids of that. It’s small compensation but try looking into English video stores (expat services usually are good guides to that). Here in Munich you can get a pretty good selection of movies and tv series if you know where to look.
Do you have Kabel Digital Englisch from Kabel Deutschland? http://www.kabeldeutschland.de/wunsch-fernsehen/abo_international/englisch_en.html They have Toon Disney and a few other more or less interesting channels. I can’t think of any other provider offering english channels via cable.
You’re right about the Premiere guys by the way. Make sure you cancel in time and if you send them the letter, better do it via Einschreiben+Rückschein. It costs a couple of euros, but you can be sure that they get it (you’ll get the signed Rückschein three or four days later). Otherwise you may hear.. Ohh, we are sooo sorry but we haven’t received your cancellation.. and you gotta pay the next 12 months.
Sorry, wrong link

Okay, it doesn’t work. Try this http://www.kabeldeutschland.de/wunsch-fernsehen/index.html click on “Infos” and then on “Senderdetails im Überblick”
Sven, I have that package… and I really should be grateful for it & stop looking for more. But I was lured in by Premiere’s promise of more toonies for the kiddos & lots of english speaking stuff for me.
Just do what I do….download. No commercials and it’s like having Tivo again.
