Size really does matter.

I went to Saturn yesterday fully intending to pick out the digital slr of my dreams… but then I saw their size. I mean, I knew they were bigger and all, but damn. I tried to imagine lugging one around with me on vacation, swapping out lenses , taking the time required to set up the perfect shot and trying not to drop it when my wrist got tired from all that hefting. Well, my life just doesn’t work that way, so after a quick 180 I went for the smallest, coolest digital camera I could find. I ended up falling in love with a Canon digital IXUS 800 IS. Six megapixel, 4x optical zoom, image stabilizer, an iso of up to 800 and a 2.5-inch lcd screen. The screen on the back is huge!
It should arrive tomorrow or the day after and I can’t wait to use it for our upcoming trip to Munich, as well as vacation at the end of the month!

B, I’m so glad you’ve brought this topic up! I’ve been thinking a lot of upgrading my plain old film camera, & I finally decided on this one:

I don’t know how to post actual pictures so there’s the link to it….I really like this one a lot! Have fun w/ yours tho
Well there is something to be said for a camera that can easily slip into a pocket, and if it is convenient, you will take more pics. The bulk of the SLR types (and the prices) is what has kept me from getting one. Sure I’d take good pics, but I really don’t want to lug the thing around … especially on vacation.
The image stabilization is a must on low-light or high zoom situations, that will be sweet. And it takes fairly long movie snippets too.
Congrats B.
Lisa … I use a Canon A40, the predecessor to the A540, it is a rugged camera, a bit thick, but I can get in a my jeans pocket. Takes ok pics, not so good in low light settings. Try one out if you can first, shutter release speed (slow ) is somewhat annoying. I’m sure improvements have been made since mine came out. Still it would be a good choice.
ah… so you ended up using my criteria for a camera… smal and easy enough to slip in your pocket!
Congratulations on your new toy, have a lot of fun with it.
I love my huge and heavy dslr, but I can see your point… wish you a lot of fun and good photos with it.
I agree with you Sven, I suspect some day we’ll end up with a DSLR too. They do take the best pictures, nothing can beat the image quality you get out of a good lense.
