In-laws, expectations & spanning europe in 12 days
Sep 1st, 2006 by B.
Chez eurotrippen will soon be invaded by visitors from the world’s only remaining superpower… my mother, father & uncle in-law are all leaving their safe haven of Erie, PA for a mid-october thru mid-november visit. Now I’m actually one of those rare people who doesn’t have a problem with my in-laws, and I’m not even saying that because they could be reading ( … or am I?? ) and I also think it’s pretty damn cool that they’re all in their 60’s and this will be the first time they’ve left the united states. I mean, they haven’t even been to mexico for crying out loud… so it’s a big deal for them and my aim is to see to it that they have a great time.
One problem I’m having, though, (aside from figuring out how to fit three extra people into this flat) is trying to manage their expectations given the timeframe. I got an email from my m.i.l. yesterday saying while they’re here they’d like to visit (and mind you, we have 12 vacation days to fit all this in) Poland (more on that later), France, the UK, Spain, Sweden, Greece and Italy. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure this is impossible. I’m just waiting for the next email saying “oh, and I forgot to add iceland…”.
So, I somehow have to whittle this down to two, maybe three countries. They’re extremely catholic so I’m thinking I can work the whole god/italy/vatican angle and maybe go Poland/Austria/Italy with a separate weekend trip to Prague thrown in for good measure.

Oh my! I totally sympathize! My parents were here for 7 days and wanted to know why it wouldn’t be possible to go to Berlin and Munich in one weekend.
Hope you have a good visit!
Have fun planning! My vote would be for Austria. It is still my favorite place - the mountains, the food, the people . . . Can I come too?
A month with them! You’re a good sport for letting them stay that long. Since they’re catholic, they’d probably love Poland.
As geeky travel guru Rick Steves always says: “Assume you’ll return. Don’t try to see everything in one trip.” But I sympathize with them and with you. I want to go everywhere too. And, someday when my family comes to visit it will be a HUGE deal for them also, possible the one and only trip here, and there’s simply no way to see everything.
