Has anyone actually been to Ireland? I’m trying to figure out where we’ll be staying the 8 days we’re there, but I’m pretty much at a loss. We’re flying into Belfast even though we never actually planned to stay in Northern Ireland for more than a day or so (hence the need for a rental car… oy, something else I need to take care of). Anyway, Dublin’s not that far away and since it’s sort of central to the country, we’re leaning toward staying there. Still- shopping, nightclubs & bars aren’t really our thing… we’re more into nature/water/cliffs/historic sites/off the beaten path stuff, all of which leads me to believe Dublin might not be the place for us.
I guess soon I’ll need to just go on faith and pick something (translation: go with the ‘pretty flat’ factor that determines where we stay 9 times out of 10), but I’m hopeful there’s some super-secret Irish reader just waiting to impart a little knowledge… if so, impart away! If not, guess I’ll go with Dublin and figure it’s just a place to rest our heads and each day we’ll strike out & see where the road takes us.

Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, Dingle…all beautiful, coastal, and naturey…rent a car and head out there!
I was in Ireland once — won’t go back, avoid the ghost tour of Dublin. I would also avoid Dublin because it seemed pretty expensive to me. There’s something to be said for striking out and getting away from the urban core. If you make it to Cork you can always go kiss the Blarney Stone.
Jelly basically took my exact comment. I’ve been to Ireland three times. Ring of Kerry is amazing scenery.
I haven’t been there myself, but many of my still-quite-Irish Boston coworkers had, and they always talked about Dingle - might be worth checking that out!
The west coast of Ireland is very rugged and beautiful. In Dublin drink lots of Guiness. I don’t like the stuff elswhere but in Dublin it tastes wonderful!
Thanks guys. I ended up going with a holiday rental outside of Dublin… much happier being out in the middle of nowhere… and it looks like it\’s about 3.5 hours to Dingle, which I think is about as far away as we\’ll want to wander.
Thanks for the tips on what to do (and drink!)…
