Laptop shopping.
Apr 30th, 2007 by B.
This weekend we kicked off a search for new laptops, which led me to a few realizations. First, when I make the jump I’m going to have to get used to a whole new keyboard. With umlauts. And keys in crazy different places. I’m particularly sad about this because (on an american keyboard anyway) I’ve memorized everything and don’t need to look at my fingers while typing. One of my favorite things to do, actually, is wait until everyone’s in bed and open my laptop, drop the brightness all the way down, and type away. It’s fun. Sniff.
Secondly, we really don’t know where to find the best deals. In america they were always, always online. Plus in america we had price search engines so comparisons were easier. Our last four laptops were bought thanks to tips from slickdeals.com. In fact, between slickdeals.com and dealtaker.com, I’m pretty sure 85% of our purchases in america rang in just above wholesale. Those were the days…
So, other than whining, I’m also here to ask if there actually are price search engines or sites dedicated to posting where good deals can be found in deutschland? Jim asked a coworker where the best place was for a bargain on a decent laptop, and he said Karstadt. I find that hard to believe. I also have trouble buying the fact that Media Markt, Saturn & Conrad are our only other (or best) sources.

My laptop is from Media Markt, it has been a really good deal and was perfect suited for me. They (Media Markt and Saturn, both owned by Metro Group) have sometimes good offers, but it’s not the norm. The same with Karstadt, it’s in no case more expensive than Saturn/MM - which are rather pricey at non-specials.
Not tested by myself in laptop relations but amazon.de might be worth an glance too.
The best-known price search engines are http://www.guenstiger.de , http://www.preissuchmaschine.com and http://www.billiger.de
Sebastian - Thanks for the tips… and we were only aware of the preissuchmaschine.com search engine, so that’s really helpful too! I guess we might have to keep our eyes open for the next special at media markt/saturn/karstadt…
My desktop is from Dell.de. Dells were also the Testsiegers in last year’s Stiftung Warentest reports for both notebooks and desktops. They’re a little pricier than the other brands though, I guess.
CHIP-Online has a Schnäppchen blog that’s worth checking out. And you can compare prices from different online retailers on their website.
You might want to check the website http://www.geizhals.at/de once you chose the type of laptop you want. They compare the prices from different online shops.
The shopping bots my husband uses are http://www.guenstiger.de and http://www.billiger.de. He prefers the former to the later. He also mentioned arlt.de or kmelektronik.de
Happy hunting!
