The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.

Thank you, everyone, for your wonderful vacation advice. I didn’t take any of it. Heh. In the end we found a great deal on a flight to Costa Del Sol and decided the cousins would just have to fend for themselves in the jungles of Paris for eleven days without us. We also found a Spanish villa- fully air-conditioned, with broadband access, a view of the ocean from our balcony AND a private pool. Bliss.
In addition we also figured out that Wroclaw, Poland is only a 3.5 hour drive and has the second largest market square in Europe. That’s enough to motivate us… a trip’s in the works for the end of June. July has us spending 1 weekend in Berlin and probably another in Regensburg, then the cousins arrive… then Poznan (again), Berlin (again), and we literally get them checked into their hotel in Paris before taking off for sunny spain. It’ll be a busy summer…
Now I’ll toss out a few random thoughts…
- Why am I the least bit interested in a reality tv show about pirates??
- Speaking of reality shows, I’m into ‘On The Lot’ already… with only two episodes I don’t have favorites yet, but I will. Soon.
- Shit. Lost is over until January. January’s a long, long time from now.
- I can’t take Cormac McCarthy seriously regardless of how hard I try. I’ve started The Road, like, fourteen times. The dude writes like Yoda “Bedrock, this”… “My heart were stone, if only”… “Recite a litany, remember”. And while I’m all for a little yodaing now and then, it gets jarring after a paragraph or two. But I do like all his referrals to ’slutlamps’… no idea what they are, but it makes me giggle every time.
- I wish I knew what the german term was for ‘floatie’, I want to buy some to take to Spain with us.
- And why is it so hard to find a decent ice cube tray in germany?? They’re dinky and when it gets hot out they melt too quickly and water down your drinks. And how the hell are you supposed to get the cubes out of the rubber ice trays? It’s just another way Ikea (king of the rubber ice tray) fucks with our mind.
- Most people will probably bitch about all the rain this weekend, but I loved it. There’s nothing like a good thunderstorm, and today it actually cooled off enough to kill the stifling humidity. It’s been so muggy lately if I didn’t know better I’d swear I was living somewhere in the amazon basin. It could storm and rain and hail like this for the next month and I’d be totally cool with it.
On this day..

Sounds like some fun summer travel. I feel your pain about Lost - every week I watch that show thinking I’ll finally understand, and every week I’m still lost, yet I can’t help but tune in. And they killed off Charlie - or maybe not, I guess we’ll have to wait until January.
re: on the lot
after tonight’s episode (the 1 minute comedy shorts…. pool of 18) i (and who wouldn’t) loved the special fx guy… that one shot was amazing… his was clearly the winner of the bunch…
i thought the other bests of the night were the first one (dancing guy) and the lucky penny guy…
it bothered me that the guy who did the trailer didn’t get reprimanded for not doing the assignment… i liked his trailer ok, but that wasn’t what they were asked to do… and they let that slide…
i’d like to see the judges get a little more judgmental…
oh, and i think i was wrong about saying lost wouldn’t be back till january… even worse, i think it’s february… uggh… but the one bit of good news is that once it is back… it’s a straight run… no reruns… in the meantime i’ll be spending a portion of that time going back and watching all three seasons yet again.
Your vacation plans sound amazing. Spain is on our list. And good for you, encouraging the cousins to take on Paris on their own. They’ll love it - good stories about getting lost on the metro, finding quaint cafes, and you won’t feel responsible for their good time.
I, too, am loving the rain, but maybe that’s the 3rd-floor-85-degrees-at-midnight-last-week talking.
I love your destination B, Spain sounds lovely in the summer…Hope you have a great, relative-free time
Hexe- I hope Charlie died. If not that would be a cheat, and I don’t want the writers of Lost cheating!
Jeanni- I’m still waiting to get Sunday’s episode. I like that you can go to the website and see the full features each set of directors did. Makes it more fun and also helps in getting to know them. I imagine it’ll count even more when they start doing stuff by themselves instead of in groups of three.
Blythe- There’s nothing worse than a stuffy top-floor flat. I curse myself on an almost daily basis in the summer for not living in an underground bunker… and we’re in germany, you know they’re out there somewhere…
Lisa- Thanks, I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures so everyone can see how lovely/not lovely it is… (I’ve got my fingers crossed for lovely)
i’m confident that charlie is in fact dead dead… and we won’t be seeing him again unless it is in a vision or something (ala boone)
Germans have a morbid fear of ice cubes. We spent YEARS looking for decent ice cube trays and then we just broke down and got a humongous American fridge with an ice machine.
Your vacation plans sound awesome.
The problem I have with reality shows (Survivor and The Apprentice are the most notable) is that I want all of them to not just get voted off or out but to die a fiery death
Which reminds me that yes, I had to import ice cube trays from the US to get some decent sized ice cubes.
I think that Krakow might have the biggest town square in Europe. Wroclaw’s town hall is exquisite.
Where on the Cost del Sol will you be going?
I meant ‘Costa’, of course.
J- That’s a good question. The full description of the area is:
‘Torre del Mar in Axarquia, Costa del Sol, Andalucia, Spain’
Not sure how we’ll program that into our navigational system, but we should be getting the full address once our payment clears for the villa. Is this a nice part of Spain?
If you ask really nicely, I will drive 1.8 miles to Target, purchase four brand new ice cube trays, and mail them to you.
Maria- you totally rock for offering, but the last thing I’d wish on you and The Boy is standing in a long line at the post office waiting to mail something internationally. Now if you have room to tuck them in your suitcase for the return trip, that’s another story…
It appears to be part of the beach resort Vélez-Málaga, which is between Malaga and Nerja. Definitely see Nerja, Frigiliana and also Anquterra (photos on my webshots page accessible from My Photos on my sidebar) - definitely get to those places. Also, Granada, Sevilla, Cordoba and Cadiz aren’t too far either. Andalucia is my fav part of Spain.
Your photos are gorgeous… I’m more excited than ever to get there now. Plus I’m hoping to get my hands on some actually spicy food.
Sorry to disappoint you, but Spanish food generally isn’t spicy. Don’t think that Spanish means Mexican. There’s a world of difference, and there’s a reason that Spain isn’t known for its food.
Darn, I’d read about a spicy potato dish called Patatas Bravas and also a supposedly spicy lentil bean soup that sounded yummy….
