Frankly Scarlet…

Everything happens for a reason, I’ve always believed that. So while I was uber-annoyed we weren’t leaving Friday for Regensburg as planned (I’d had what I deemed at the time a shitty day and couldn’t wait to get away), I should have know there was a reason why. By 10:00 p.m. I’d figured it out- Sydney had a fever of 102 degrees. At roughly 1:00 a.m., even with a liberal dose of tylenol, her fever was still holding steady at 102, and I was starting to worry. By 6:00 she was vomiting uncontrollably. We left for the weekend clinic at the hospital at 7:00, and by 8:00 we had our diagnosis… scarlet fever. Seems kindergarten got in a parting shot after all.
After hooking her up to an iv for dehydration, we finally got to bring her home. A day later she’s loaded on a cocktail of (9 different meds in total) antibiotics, anti-nausea (suppositories - what 6 yr. old wouldn’t love that?), a weird & slimy electrolyte concoction, tylenol, and an ointment for the rash (I see now why it’s called scarlet fever… she’s covered in a bumpy, bright red rash - kind of like a super bad sunburn, only it itches - a lot), but at least her fever’s down and she’s no longer projectile vomiting like Linda Blair in The Exorcist.
So, long story short, it’s a good thing we stuck close to home. I’ll also be redefining what I consider a ‘bad’ day after this. And while operation summer fun ‘07 is off to a less than stellar start, I figure it can only improve from here…

Oh no, the poor thing. I hope she’s feeling better soon!
My husband’s coworker’s wife just had scarlet fever too…
oh my! That sounds really nasty! I hope her recovery is quick!
Omg. That’s like something you read in a history book. I didn’t think those diseases were still going around. Your poor girl.
I hope she gets better real quick. Drat that Kindergarten.
I just had a thought. Your summer started out like this, it’s going to be stellar from now on out, your best ever. That’s some kinda cosmic law you can count on. Whenever something really good happens to me I drop to my knees and pray for whoever is about to die to balance the scales.
Oh no, how terrible! I hope Sydney feels better soon!
Regensburg is a HUGE MESS this weekend anyway. It’s the Bürgerfest and the whole Innenstadt is packed full of drunken teenagers and twenty-somethings listening to bands playing badly done Bloodhound Gang covers. I really didn’t enjoy our evening out in the festival yesterday. Everyone was pushing and shoving - was a basic nightmare for an eight-month-pregnant lady! It was not fun at all like the World Cup Fan Fest in Berlin or the Hanse Sail in Rostock.
Wow… I didn’t know Scarlet Fever was still around. Glad you caught it!
Gute Besserung to Sydney/Scarlet!
Carol
Yikes !
Tell Iddy to hang in there.
Holy Yikes, B!
That IS a mommy-nightmare; seeing your child so sick, and being so helpless sucks! We’ve never had Scarlet Fever at Casa Harrison, BUT we did get Chicken Pox over one Christmas Holiday a few year back…all three…one. at. a. time.
It was dreadful!
I, too, am glad you were close to home. Get some really thick scrunchy socks and super jammies for you both…cuddle down together into bed (If you’re allowed-I’m not sure what the do’s and don’ts of Scarlet Fever are exactly)…and snuggle with your girl!!
I hope she feels better soon!
Hugs,
Esther
Awww, poor little sweetie! I didn’t know it could be that bad - most of the kids in our kindergarten that had it seemed to breeze right through with just the rash and mild fever. I’m glad they gave you all the right meds to prevent complications. Suppositories are very common place here, even for older kids and adults, especially with anti-nausea and pain relievers. Tons o’ fun if you’re not used to them, no?
And um…what are the chances of the rest of you getting it???? I’m crossing my fingers that doesn’t happen.
Thanks everyone. We’ve joked before that Sydney must be allergic to Germany because everything she gets here seems to be wost-case. Plus she never had a problem with asthma until we moved to Dresden. I guess all of our (and especially Sydney’s) puny american immune systems aren’t yet equipped to handle deutsch germs.
Oh, and there’s a high likelihood the rest of us will catch scarlet fever… barring that, strep throat at the very least. Yay.
Oh no! I’m obviously reading this a day late, so sorry to hear that Syd’s so sick, how aweful! I know that she’s getting excellent care from mommy, hope she feels better soon
Eww scarlet fever, that sounds so like “Little Women.” Summer heat makes a rash itch ten times more. I hope Sydney gets well soon!
