Mommy stuff & a question or two.
Aug 13th, 2007 by B.
A week from today the girls are back in school and routine once again rears its ugly head. I don’t do well with routine and can never seem to get my shit together before, say, 10ish. A real problem since school starts at 8:30. And while Robbie can & does get herself to class each morning, I not only have to drive Iddy, but walk in with her (meaning I have to don a bra & brush my hair and stuff) and play nice with all the other mommies dropping their kiddos off.
Then life falls into a semi familiar grind of school… oct. break (travel)… school… christmas break (the only time of the year I’m unwilling to travel)… school… feb. break (travel)… school… april break (travel)… school… summer. Wow, when I see it typed out like that, there really are quite a few breaks in the schedule. It’s a good thing though, since planning all our mini-trips keeps me distracted and (more or less) out of trouble.
Wow, this is a really boring entry. Heh.
Oh, I do have a question for all the mommies out there… this saturday is Sydney’s graduation ceremony at DIS. First, will I be expected to dress up for it? I found some pictures of a past event on the DIS website and everyone seemed fairly decked out, but I still hold out hope that I won’t have to wear a skirt. Sigh.
Also, we have to fill a zuckertüten for her new teacher to hand her during the graduation ceremony. First off, way to give the teacher credit for something I’ve done… secondly, what, exactly, are you supposed to fill the zuckertüten with? My impression is it’s normally candy, but I’m gun-shy about that as the school is like the candy/healthy eating gestapo. Last year I made the grave mistake of tossing a small packet of gummies into Syd’s lunch and I not only got a note sent home telling me there’s a strict no sweets policy, but it also made the class newsletter for that week. I mean, their idea of ‘yummy’ snacks for 5 & 6 year olds were lemon slices and plain cucumbers… whatever.
Still, I want to walk the fine line of actually getting something Syd will enjoy, while at the same time not risking the ire of her new teacher so early in the year. Man, school hasn’t even started yet and already it’s complicated…
On this day..

Candy Gestapo … yikes I thought we straightened that crap out in 1945.
How much longer till Robbie has a license?
Then she can take Iddy to school first while you sleep in.
How about müsli bar or Fruchtschnitten (a kind of dried fruit bar)? Zuckertüten or Schultüten (more general) do not only contain candies (misleading name though), but the children sometimes also find in it small books or crayons/pencils or small toys or something like that. As far as I heard this tradition of the Schultüte on the first day of school seems to be German tradition. Do you have this ceremony in the USA?
Remus- I’m up plenty early for school, just can’t seem to find the motivation to hustle out the door. Robbie can’t drive until she’s 18 per german law.
Sabi- Thanks for the tips. America has nothing even close to a grade 1 celebration, but the international school embraces all things german (as they should!). Now all I have to do is go shopping tomorrow for goodies to fill up our snazzy Prinzessin Lillifee zuckertüte.
Hi B-
Speaking as a Kindergarten/First Grade teacher, I’ve rarely been given anything except something homebaked or sweets on a “Meet the Teacher” night. After my children get to know me, they (at the tender age of 5) discover that I am a coffee-aholic with real problems getting through the day without a good, strong cuppa! From there, it is a Starbucks Junkie’s HEAVEN, raining giftcards like no one’s business!
BUT, since you’re dealing with freaks, I say go for school supplies, little cute school supplies that can be used in learning centers, or for small classroom treats at a later time. I’m all about the small, fun, neato crap…however, at the end of one particularly amazing year I did get something personal from Tiffany & Co. It rocked! You don’t know this person yet, don’t invest too much, just make it enough for Sydney to feel good.
The morning UNwake-up-ness, I have NO clue there. I just try to haul my Scary Spice self out of bed and deal…I am convinced though that the coffee really helps “make me a better Momma in the morning!”
Good Luck! Let me know what little goodies you find!
Esther
Oh shit! I’m totally busted. Today I got a call from the school asking if they could clear up any questions I might have about Saturday’s ceremony, what to fill the zuckertüten with, or how formally to dress. And while it WAS nice hearing firsthand what to expect and do, it means the cat’s out of the bag… someone at DIS reads my blog & knows how generally clueless I am. lol
(note to self- say only nice things about international school from this point forward…)
okay..not laughing at you, but with you! Holy, Holy, CRAP! If I were closer, I’d buy you a beer!
Lemon slices and cucumbers for snacks? Are you kidding me? I am soooo laughing! I think in the U.S. that might be called child abuse!
Now, about being busted, I hope that doesn’t mean you’re going to have to hold back on future posts coz that would just be so wrong and you’d end up imploding or something.
