Sugar cone festivals & parenting at warp speed.
Aug 18th, 2007 by B.
Where has time gone? Robbie starts high school this year (talk about making you feel old) and Sydney’s in first grade. The zuckertüten festival was cute. We got to meet Sydney’s new teacher and see her classroom. There are only 16 kiddos in her class and two teachers, not too shabby. And this year not all of the parents seem so stepford… a fact I’m extremely grateful for. I mean, I know deep down we all nurture an inner freak, but I swear most of theirs drive Bentleys and ‘do’ the tennis instructor between manicures. I look at them and think we’re fundamentally different, which I suppose makes me every bit as big a snob as they are…
So on Monday life will get considerably calmer. More time to write, relax & reflect… not always a good thing, but hey, it leaves me plenty of time to pick up a new hobby. Like tennis. Heh.

Great pictures of one & all there B……Iddy looks so cute in her dress! Are those cone things their treat bags or something? They look nice & brightly coloured
wow, B! this is impressive! what did you end up filling the cone with? my suggestions…for small fun little things-heavens! you’d need a zillion!
from the smiles on all your faces, it looks as though the day was a
“win-win!” i’m so glad!
The cones were filled with a mixture of school supplies, toys, candy and (in Syd’s case) jewelry. I’m just happy Syd got a teacher who doesn’t seem to be all rule-followey and by-the-book. As you can imagine, those kind of people confuse me…
Tennis lessons… This was totally put in there just to see if I read your blog entries..
What if I promised you Racquetball lessons.. It’s just like tennis except my racquet is smaller and the ‘lessons’ don’t last as long…
B, at my old job, my colleagues nicknamed me the “Creatively Insubordinate One” It made me feel like Yoda, which was fine, and set the tone for the year…sometimes there are teachers who get it, when parents don’t! Hang in there, stick to your guns, and “don’t go changing….”
I hope Syd has a fantastic year! Our kids start a week from next, and I am SO hopeful for a good year for them-I hate being that Momma who is a teacher, but not working, the “others” find out about you and it sucks. Really it sucks. watch my posts get all bitter and whiny as school gets going-I’ll be my own worst enemy…blech!
Anyhow-Yay for Syd!
In 1953 I started school in Germany with my best friend. We both had a sugar cone although there wasn’t too much in it being lean years. I still have the picture and after we emigrated I saw my friend 4 times. Next month I will see her again….ciao
Oh what precious pictures! I love how she’s waving in the class shot — she’s gorgeous. I miss the cones, I miss how children are somehow more … cherished that side of the pond. Well, maybe it’s more that childhood is more cherished. There’s not so much this rush to grow up? My kids are so big now. Maybe I can get my daughter a cone for starting back to college …
