True confessions-R-us.
Jan 26th, 2008 by B.
The other day someone sent me a link to True Mom Confessions. It’s another of those ‘post secrets’ sites- focusing primarily on how women feel about parenting, but also relationship stuff & other junk. To be honest, I found it mildly depressing… who knew so many women were unhappy, yet felt powerless to do anything about it?
Then I clicked over to True Dad Confessions … Yowza. Men are brutal!
And if that doesn’t float your boat, there’s always:
True Bride Confessions
True Office Confessions
True Green Confessions
True Military Wives Confessions
I’ve honestly never understood the point of these sites. Does it really make you feel better to bitch about your life to anonymous strangers who also happen to be bitching about their lives? Or maybe it’s good for the people who read and think “poor slobs, I’ve got it soooooo much better than them”
Confessing your innermost thoughts & sins only seems impressive when you’re willing to own them…

OMG B, put those websites away and don’t ever look at them again! How depressing. I thought the parent ones might have some interesting insights on not-so-discussed aspects of what having children is like. There were a few on the mom site. I read six or seven pages of the dad site and only three or four comments involved children at all. Mostly they were just about wives. What a picture they paint of a battle within themselves - their biological need to reproduce and continue their line, fighting with the need to have a HAWTTTT SEXXXXXY un-stretchmarked wife. My husband is embarrassed for his gender after reading it.

I dislike those sites. If you “need” to make an anonymous confession, maybe you really need to talk to the person you are complaining about. If you are confessing about yourself, maybe you should really deal with the issue rather than post it on a site like that. Anyway… I’m a take control kind of woman, and in sites like that, I see too many people willing to sit back and be miserable. That’s not life to me…that’s merely existing.

Ok. I visited every site you mentioned and I am shocked. It’s shocking and sad to hear from so many people who feel powerless and miserable. And keeping all of that negativity bottled up inside is toxic. No wonder people “snap”. I agree with you guys about owning your confessions and taking control of your life but some people are not as strong as others. And maybe these sites give those weak people an outlet. Perhaps their only outlet.
Schokolade Madchen’s last blog post..WTF?
Hi there,
The sites aren’t for everyone …that’s for sure. But there are so many users who 1) find the sites really entertaining (did you read true office??) and more importantly 2) really, really helpful. Hundreds (yes, hundreds) of women email me every month to say “THANK YOU for this forum…I have no one else to talk to about this (yes, that’s sad…a lot of these women are oh so isolated and lonely) and I feel so much better knowing I’m not alone or crazy doing what I do or thinking what I think.”
I’ve also found that the sharing of secrets helps others unlock the secrets they keep from others and even from themselves. I’m all for talking openly and honestly one on one…but so many women are afraid of being judged for their true feelings…and many, rightly so. So this gives them an alternative outlet…even if it’s only an anonymous one.
True Hook Up Confessions.com is launching tomorrow. This one should be fun….
Love your blog btw….
Damn. Those were awful. I do like PostSecret, but these seem to be a totally different deal. And that dads’ site? Please, besides most of the posts having nothing to do w/ fatherhood, they’re all a bunch of immature whining babies themselves. God.
