I’m actually excited about American Idol this time around. After sitting through years of shitty-to-mediocre singers (I never saw myself buying an idol winner’s cd anyway), there are actually 4 or 5 I genuinely like.
I just wish they’d change the format of the show. It’s tough coming off auditions where great songs from bands like Queen & The Doors are not only sung, but sung fairly well… to end up with Perry Como & Gloria Estefan weeks. I mean, we know from ‘Rock Star’ that decent artists are willing to release their catalogue (or part of it anyway) for reality shows.
So how about instead of Paul Anka week, we get Pink Floyd week? Or maybe bypass Neil Sedaka week in favor of … jesus, pretty much anyone other than Neil Sedaka?
Radiohead / Queen / David Bowie / Nirvana /The Killers / Tracy Bonham / Coldplay over Bon Jovi (the “edgy” new band from last year’s competition) / Bobby Darin (I don’t give a shit what anyone says- Mac The Knife sucks) / The Bee Gees / Diana Ross or that weird dude from Herman’s Hermits.
That said, this year actually shows promise…

now that the audition part is over i’m tuning in… i’ve just seen the last two episodes and i’m old, so i don’t remember any of their names… but there were a few i liked.
the show is infuriating (thank god… this year at least i get the help of watching it dvr style) and as soon as it is over i forget these people and have never been the slightest bit remotely interested in any of the music that comes out of it… but still, it is one of the few reality shows that i care to watch.
i agree that i’m kinda psyched as well… i’m looking forward to finding a favorite and figuring out which one of them will be the focus of my hate (here’s a clue… that person will most likely be around for a long time)
