Scaling back.
Feb 27th, 2008 by B.
I’ve spent the last week deregistering from practically every site I’ve ever signed up for. I was only half-assing most of them anyway. I’d log on maybe once a quarter, tool around a bit and then log back out before I felt obligated to do anything. So goodbye facebook… adios flixter… farewell twitter… nice knowing ya, goodreads… it was fun while it lasted linkedin… seeya classmates online… yahoo! groups? truth is you were always kinda lame… message boards & chat rooms too numerous to mention- it’s not you, it’s me. I hope we can still be friends… youtube? Ok, I’m totally keeping youtube.
I’d still love to find one truly great, all-encompassing site. One with the give/take of a busy message board and cool up-to-the-minute techie features, as well as the ability to catalog your opinions/reviews/collections.
But also somewhere without stupid shit like who can amass the most friends or encouragement to bestow banal, meaningless gifts. A place where no one is allowed to poke/prod/bite/slap or molest you, and turning someone into a zombie (whatever that means) is grounds for immediate dismissal. Where simple, intelligent conversation rules the day, and obnoxious posturing is frowned upon. Where not a single woman claims to be a stunningly beautiful mensa genius who fucks like a minx when not volunteering to build schools for impoverished kids in third-world countries… and men do more than talk about boobies or constantly refer to the size of their penis.
Seriously… if you ever find that place, shoot me an email. I’d love to join.
In the meantime I’m scaling back. We all know the internet’s the world’s most potent time-waster, but lately I’ve been feeling like I’m running out of time to waste. So I’ve given myself a deadline: I’ve got until August to finish the story/novel/novella I started last year. If I can’t produce something I’m proud of by then, well, it’s probably time to put writing on the shelf and find another hobby. Until then I’ll be digging deep to keep myself on task.
Fear not though- I’ll still be around here plenty spewing my own special brand of insanity.

amen sister…
and on a superficial note… can i also ask that the perfect playground not be an eyesore or boring to look at…
jeanni’s last blog post..once? (upon a time)
OK, OK, I promise to stop sending you invites to sites where you can record your opinion of the last lunar eclipse etc. But I expect an updae on that story in August, man.
Jeanni - Yep, it needs to be pretty, too. Something original (that means it needs you!)
Blythe - I’ve been so bad when it comes to writing… a year in and all I’ve completed is a fairly decent synopsis & character development. Basically the easy, skeletal stuff. From there is seems so daunting… and with just 5 short months to go, I’m thinking it’s going to have to morph from full-length to short story. The main thing is that I actually finish it, though - if only to prove something to myself.
Damn, I must not know the right people - I don’t think any of my Facebook or LinkedIn contacts have told me about their penis size!
Jul’s last blog post..Have Vonage? Cancel it.
I’ve been on the Well since 2001, and might recommend that to you. Smart people, good conversation, and they do show up from time to time and prove to be great fun to hang out with. If you want, shoot me an e-mail and I can get you a trial membership for free.
Ed Ward’s last blog post..A Death In The Family And (Maybe) Some Hope
Hmm, I’ve never heard of The Well, I’m off to google now…
B - If you are looking for a writing buddy, let me know. I promised myself I wouldn’t waste this time away from work and I would write but I’m doing everything else. I finished a novel length work about three years ago and tucked it away. Started two novel length works and a short story but haven’t finished them. If I had to email someone peridocially to update my progress, I might be more inclined to get off my ass. Obviously, I’m looking for some motivation but if we can help each other then I’m game.
Hexe’s last blog post..Flu and Frenzy
Sounds good… I’m easily distracted but I’ve got this self-imposed deadline to think about. Anything to keep me on track is probably good.
Pick a day and we’ll report in on what we accomplished each week (so far, nada this week). We can use the blog or my email - flhexe@yahoo.com.
